BFSG 2025: What you need to know and do

The Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) comes into force on June 28, 2025 and obliges you as an entrepreneur to make your digital products and services accessible. The aim of the law is to give people with disabilities and older people equal access to digital services.

Who is affected?

The BFSG primarily affects companies that offer digital products or services. This includes manufacturers and retailers of devices such as computers, tablets and smartphones as well as providers of self-service terminals and online services such as online stores and marketplaces. Micro-enterprises with fewer than ten employees and an annual turnover of less than €2 million are exempt from the requirements, but should still consider accessibility.

What are the requirements?

The requirements of the BFSG are clear: your digital presence must be accessible, operable, understandable and robust for all users. This includes, for example, ensuring that content is accessible to people with impaired senses, that navigation also works without a mouse and that all texts are easy to understand. The site must also be compatible with various assistive technologies. Compliance with international standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) or EN 301 549 is considered sufficient.

What else do you need to consider?

Make sure to refer to accessibility in your general terms and conditions. Products that must be accessible may only be sold if they bear the CE mark and have easy-to-understand instructions for use. Manufacturers of electronic products in particular should adhere strictly to the specifications here.

What can you do?

To ensure that you meet the requirements of the BFSG, you should start reviewing and adapting your digital offerings at an early stage. Violations could result in fines of up to 100,000 euros, sales bans and warnings. We are happy to support you in analyzing and implementing the necessary accessibility measures.

Conclusion

The BFSG presents companies with new challenges, but also offers the opportunity to reach a broader target group and demonstrate responsibility. With early planning and professional support, you can successfully implement the requirements and ensure the accessibility of your digital offerings.
